"Revolutionary War Privateers" Tour

History, geography and hands-on activities combine in this family-oriented tour showcasing the Shaw Mansion as a monument to New London's participation in the American Revolution.

Have a look at rare prizes "liberated" from British ships.

Learn the similarities and differences between the well-known practice of piracy and the less well-known practice
of licensing private vessels (privateers) to attack enemy merchant vessels in time of war.

Nathaniel Shaw, Jr., appointed by the Continental Congress as Connecticut's Naval Agent during
the Revolution, was a leader of the privateers.

Hear the story of how New London was punished for harboring privateers and for
their success at capturing British merchant ships!

"Revolutionary War Privateers" lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes hands-on activities for young people.
